The present paper focuses on the characterization and leaching of pelletized SiMn SAFD (silicomanganese submerged arc furnace dust). Characterization of the examined submerged arc furnace dust was carried out by X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A number of phases were identified, including metallic manganese, jacobsite, braunite, diopside and quartz. Leaching experiments were based on the extraction of Mn from SAFD with dilute sulphuric acid at atmospheric pressure. The influence of reaction temperature was studied and up to 49 percent Mn extraction was achieved. XRD and XRF were used for the characterization of the leached residues. This showed that the major phases present were braunite or bixbyite and gypsum.
